The response of a relatively narrow (∼7 km wide) and deep (∼ m deep) steep-sided (up to 45° bottom slope) submarine canyon to strong wind forcing is explored using data from an element moored array as well as CTD surveys in the vicinity of Astoria submarine by: Lead Guest Editor for special volume of Continental Shelf Research from PECS (Physics of Estuaries and Coastal Seas) conference. Reviewer for marine-related divisions of NSF, NOAA, EPA, CALFED, California Sea Grant, and CFCSA (Canadian), among others.

For example, Imran and Syvitski studied the Northern California Margin near the mouth of the Eel River and suggested that hyperpycnal flows may be influenced by the along-shelf currents and be deflected northward away from the canyon. Under such conditions, shelf currents Cited by: 8.

Moored observations are used to investigate the seasonal change in vertical structure of the cross-shelf circulation at a midshelf location in the northern California Current System.

Along-shelf wind is primarily responsible for subtidal, cross-shelf circulation over the northeastern GOM during the spring and summer months (Dzwonkowski et al., ), while the cross-shelf wind. In this study, the subtidal current was investigated by the long-term mooring measurement, which was deployed on the main pathway of the cross-shelf circulation on purpose.

The day observation in January indicated the magnitude and direction of the northern ECS current, and its Author: Chongguang Pang, Dongliang Yuan, Man Jiang, Fushuo Chu, Yao Li.

Abstract. To explore cross-shelf flow in the northern South China Sea, model diagnostic calculation was conducted using a regional, three-dimensional, primitive equation model (P.

Coastal Ocean Observing Systems provides state-of-the-art scientific and technological knowledge in coastal ocean observing systems, along with guidance on establishing, restructuring, and improving similar systems.

The book is intended to help oceanographers understand, identify, and recognize how oceanographic research feeds into the various. Ruixiang Li, Changsheng Chen, Huayong Xia, Robert C. However, because the mean, subtidal, and tidal-current patterns in any particular location were reasonably stable with time, one could determine a regional pattern for these current fields in the central Southern California Bight even though measurements at the various locations were obtained at.

Geophys. Internal waves are gravity waves that oscillate within a fluid medium, rather than on its surface. To exist, the fluid must be stratified: the density must change (continuously or discontinuously) with depth/height due to changes, for example, in temperature and/or the density changes over a small vertical distance (as in the case of the thermocline in lakes and oceans or an.

1 Introduction. Circulation in the Gulf of Alaska consists of two major current systems: the cyclonic subarctic gyre and the Alaska Coastal Current (ACC) [e.g., Dodimead et al., ; Favorite et al., ; Royer, a; Reed and Stabeno, ; Stabeno et al., ; Ladd et al., ].The gyre covers a major part of the Gulf and is comprised of the West Wind Drift along its southern boundary Cited by: 1.

[1] Numerical simulations of the Hudson River estuary using a terrain‐following, three‐dimensional model (Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS)) are compared with an extensive set of time series and spatially resolved measurements over a 43 day period with large variations in tidal forcing and river discharge.

The model is particularly effective at reproducing the observed temporal. Allahdadi, M. N., and C. Li, Effect of stratification on current hydrodynamics over Louisiana shelf during Hurricane Katrina, Water Science and Engineering, Allahdadi, M.

The overall view is found to be more complex than originally thought, owing to the great variability in shelf width and coastline orientation and to the.
